The Anchor in their hands

The Anchor in their hands
The people sat upon the shore, And their hearts were filled with grief
As they watched their mighty sailboat, Being smashed upon the reef
Their captain had abandoned ship, The day the storm arose
And the fishermen soon followed him And the rowing men just froze
The people started jumping for they had nothing else to do
For none of them were captain And none of them were crew
With pain and fear and trembling they made it to the shore
In the clothes that they were wearing And not a skerrick more
And in the midst of all their heartbreak they watched the boat go down
Then the air was filled with silence. Nobody made a sound
For, they were people of the water, it was all they knew to do
To listen to the captain and to listen to the crew
Then someone broke the silence and began to sing a song
And the people started humming and they began to get along
Someone made a fishing rod and someone caught a fish
And someone found a seashell and it made a lovely dish
And someone rocked the children and someone hugged the old
And someone lit a fire to keep away the cold
And someone told the story about why the ship was lost
Someone forgot to drop the anchor, so who should pay the cost
Some people blamed the captain, some people blamed the crew
Some people blamed the fishermen but no one really knew
Then the day gave way to night time, and the night gave way to day
And the people of the water learned another way
They learned that each man has a gift to give among common water folk
Especially when they’re stuck on land and haven’t got a boat

They learned, that they were more than mighty sailors
Weathering storms between the lands
They were a people on a journey
With the Anchor in their hands.
